What are the benefits of powder coating structural steel?
Powder coating is one of the most durable and effective coatings available. When coating with traditional paint, the coat is applied wet and left to dry. If the coating is too thick it will run. In contrast, a powder coat is applied using electrostatic energy. This means that the powder and the item being coated are magnetically attracted to each other. This attraction allows for a much thicker coat to build up and there is no risk of the coat running because magnetic force holds the particles in place.
Once a suitable coat has been applied, the item is placed in an industrial oven and cured for up to 30 minutes at roughly 200 degrees Celsius. Curing bonds the particles within the powder together to form a skin around the steel that will protect it from corrosive elements.
What types of steel can be powder coated?
Steel, in general, is an ideal candidate for powder coating. Applying a powder coat involves the use of electrostatic energy and heat. Steel can withstand high heat and it is capable of receiving a charge, so there are very few drawbacks to powder coating steel. But it is important that the steel is properly cleansed of all solvents before the coat is applied.
At the Powder Coaters in Nanaimo BC, our expert technicians have years of experience powder coating structural steel, and they know exactly what needs to be done to prep, coat, and cure your structural steel so that it will last for years to come.

In order to get your structural steel powder-coated, you will need to bring it into our shop. A powder coat must be cured before the part can be put into use, and this step in the process requires an industrial-size oven. The Powder Coaters is your one-stop powder coating shop, once we receive your parts we will take care of the rest.
Our technicians will first clean the items in a chemical bath. Once any excess residue has been removed, we will apply the selected resin to your steel using our industrial-grade powder coating guns. After sufficiently coating your part, we will then move it to our full-sized oven for curing. With the process complete, our technicians will check the steel for any defaults.
